[SG] and Final Consonant Allophony in Tz'utujil

چکیده
This paper considers two phenomena in Tz'utujil (Mayan) phonology: final sonorant devoicing and aspiration of plain (pulmonic) stops affricates. Both occur word-internally coda position, as well word-finally. I present an Optimality-Theoretic (OT) analysis which accounts for both these via positional constraints on [spread glottis] ([SG]). also attested variation across the Mayan language family predicts implicational relationship between nasal devoicing, obstruent aspiration. Final is typologically rare somewhat difficult to explain terms phonetic motivation. may be able provide insight into typology laryngeal features roles contrast pressures phonology.

Consonant-vowel cohesiveness in speech production as revealed by initial and final consonant exchanges
Two experiments use a procedure developed by Carter and Bradshaw (1984) to examine the role of syllable structure in speech production. In the procedure, subjects exchange phonological segments in corresponding positions of a pair of visuallypresented words or nonwords and to produce the resulting words or nonwords as quickly as possible. Carter and Bradshaw had shown that the pattern of latenc...
متن کاملConsonant-Final Loanwords and Epenthetic Vowels in Italian*
The quality of an epenthetic vowel in a particular language may vary depending on segmental and prosodic factors, such as the quality of the surrounding consonants, the quality of other vowels in the word, and the position of the epenthetic vowel within the word. This last factor has received little attention in the literature. I have identified a number of cases in Italian in which the quality...
متن کاملHomophonous phonotactic and morphonotactic consonant clusters in word-final position
Morphonotactic clusters are defined as combinations of phonemes across morpheme boundaries. As they are cognitively processed faster and acquired earlier than phonotactic clusters, it is hypothesised that in speech production, morphonotactic clusters are more robust and highlighted than phonotactic clusters. The aim of this study was to compare homophonous phonotactic and morphonotactic consona...
متن کاملWord-final Consonant and Cluster Acquisition in Indian English(es)
In the acquisition of a second language, numerous factors interact simultaneously, including the patterns of the first language (L1), the patterns of the target language (L2), universals of language acquisition, and the amount and type of exposure to the L2. English is learned as a second language in India, where the first languages of the English learners differ widely in the phonotactics of c...
